Keynote Speakers: 

 

Professor Margaret Ikpoh

Margaret Ikpoh is a GP Partner at Holderness Health. She is the current Royal College of General Practitioners Vice Chair for Professional Development and Training Standards.
She is the practice lead for research and has had previous roles with the NIHR Yorkshire and Humber as a research champion for First5 GPs and AITs.
She is the current National NIHR Settings lead for Primary Care and a Trustee for the Faculty of Medical Leadership and Management.
She is the former Associate Director for Primary Care for Hull York Medical School and is a GP Trainer.
In 2021 she was voted the Fellow of the year at the RCGP Inspire awards.
She is the former co-Chair for the regional Primary Care Workforce Group with NHS England & Improvement for the North-East and Yorkshire Regional People Board and is still an active member.
In 2022 she was voted one of HSJ’s top 50 most influential Black, Asian and minority ethnic figures in health.
In 2024 she was awarded the Caribbean and African Health Network Special Recognition Award for Leadership in Primary Care. 
In 2024 she was appointed as a Trustee for the Faculty of Medical Leadership and Management.

Professor Jermey Howick

Professor Howick is the inaugural Director of the Stoneygate Centre for Empathic Healthcare, where his mission is to ensure that all healthcare consultations include a dose of empathy. Previously, he worked in the University of Oxford’s Centre for Evidence-Based Medicine, where he co-founded the Oxford Empathy Programme. He holds a degree in Engineering from Dartmouth College, and graduate degrees from the London School of Economics and the University of Oxford. He is currently a member of the Sigma Xi honours society and the NIHR Applied Research Collaboration (ARC) for the East Midlands.
He recently co-founded the Global Network for Empathy in Healthcare, aiming to infuse empathy into every healthcare consultation. With over 250 peer-reviewed publications and three books, including the Amazon #1 bestseller Doctor You, he is a recognized authority in evidence-based healthcare. His work has earned awards from the British Medical Association, European Society for Person-Cantered Care, and the University of Oxford.
Professor Howick has appeared on BBC, ITV, Channel 4, and NPR, and his research was featured in a BBC Horizon Documentary that had 2 million viewers. He regularly speaks at high-profile events, delivering keynote lectures and workshops for corporations, NGOs, and academic audiences, inspiring change in healthcare practices worldwide.
He is an international rowing champion and holds a Commonwealth Games Silver Medal.

Dr Saqib Anwar

Saqib Anwar is Medical Director System Improvement and Professional Standards for the NHS England Midlands region. He is also Deputy Higher Level Responsible Officer for the Midlands region as well as being the Responsible officer for GP’s working across Northamptonshire, Coventry and Warwickshire. Prior to this he worked as a GP Partner, GP Trainer, and Foundation Doctor Clinical Supervisor in Leicestershire for around 13 years.
Saqib has an extensive portfolio of representation on various local, national, and international committees for both the BMA and RCGP. He is currently a serving member of RCGP Council. As a result of his efforts and achievements, Saqib was recognised in the Pulse Power 50 list for 2015, 2016 and 2017 as well as being awarded a Fellowship of the RCGP in 2017, making him one of the youngest recipients of this award. He is an Honorary fellow of The University of Leicester.
Aside from this Saqib is an avid cricket player and fan and with 3 young boys can often be found on some cricket field across Leicestershire in the summer.

Dr Ed Pooley is a nationally recognised speaker, author, and trainer who combines techniques from the disciplines of psychology, psychotherapy, marketing, sales, and business to train healthcare professionals how to better communicate with their patients and each other, improve time management, and boost wellbeing. Ed works as a GP in Nottinghamshire and runs the Facebook Group 'Difficult Conversations in Medicine'. Prior to medicine, Ed was a researcher in psychiatry and ran a web development company.

 

Dr Tushar Shamji

Dr Tushar Shamji is a newly elected County Board Member representative, November 2024 - 2028. Dr Shamji is a GP Partner at Market Harborough and Bosworth Partnership. He is the practice research lead and GP trainer. He has a background in audiology (trained at UCL, ear institute), he is abe to communicate in British Sign Language (BSL, Level 2) and has an interest lifestyle medicine.

 

 Dr Ebrahim Mulla

Greg Povey

Sherraine Harris

Sherraine Harris is a Digital Midwife at University Hospitals Leicester. With 10 years of clinical experience, in the UK and abroad, she has transitioned into the Digital realm supporting colleagues for an improved user experience. Her responsibilities range from supporting the teams with basic troubleshooting advice to configuration of clinical systems. Currently, she is supporting the roll out of a new patient administration system and a maternity electronic patient record within the trust. Sherraine is passionate about inclusion, ensuring that technology in healthcare is accessible and designed with all users in mind.

 

David Farrell

Our Journey into Digital with the Shuri Network

David Farrell is Head of Product for the NHS Digital Academy and has over 30 years of delivery experience in the NHS and major private sector organisations. 
He is responsible for the Academy’s suite of education products, aimed at improving the digital skills of the workforce. David is particularly proud of successfully driving the design, delivery and sustainable positioning of products such as the Digital Health Leadership Programme and the Digital Boards Programme.
He is passionate about supporting the need to bridge the digital skills gap and is also a workstream lead in support of Futuredotnow’s cross-industry work in this area. 

 

James Pell

James Pell is the BMA Membership Development Manager and Employment Advisor covering the East Midlands region. He oversees the BMA's local engagement activities which includes the recruitment of new members and executing national campaigns within local workplaces. James also represents members with employment issues such as pay claims, contractual disputes and bullying & harassment claims.

 

Claire Harriman

Understanding and Negotiating Your Contract

Claire Harriman is the BMA Regional Support Officer covering Lincolnshire, Leicestershire, Northamptonshire and Nottinghamshire. She gives employment law advice and representation to all grades and specialities of doctors, from medical students to medical directors. Examples of the types of cases dealt with are relationship difficulties between colleagues and management, contractual difficulties, such as pay or leave queries. Claire also sits on various committees with Trusts, such as the Local Negotiating Committees and Resident Doctor Committees, making sure that all local policies are in line with the national terms and conditions of service and raising about any collective concerns, such as on-call facilities not being up to standard.

 

 

Dr Kirk Moore

Dr Kirk Moore is a Graduate of Leicester Medical School - intake year 1989 and is a General Practitioner at Measham Medical Unit since 2002 and senior partner since 2009.
He founded North West Leicestershire GP Federation in 2014 and has been Clinical Chair of a 12 practice Federation since it formed.
Kirk was appointed Clinical Director of North West Leicestershire Primary Care Network in 2019.
Kirk is a long suffering supporter of Blackburn Rovers.

 

 

Laura Norton

Laura Norton has worked in the NHS for 20 years, most of which has been spent working within Primary Care.
She has spent 10 years as a commissioner holding senior head of contracts and transformation roles within the CCGs and ICB and managing the rollout of the COVID Vaccination programme for Leicestershire.
Laura is now Chief Operating Office for the NWL GP Federation which runs clinical services like the Primary Care Network and Women’s Health Hub for Leicestershire.
She is passionate about Primary Care and believes in the important of collaboration to achieve excellent outcomes for our patients.

 

 

Philippa Guy

Understanding your Practice Income

Philippa Guy has been the Business Manager for a large inner city training practice in Leicester for the past 12 years and as such, has first-hand experience of the day to day practicalities of managing and forecasting practice finances.  During this time she has led the practice through a merger and a substantial building extension as well as changes in partners over the years.  Philippa is also a qualified Coach and Accredited DISC Practitioner and a Management Director on the LLR Training Hub Board and a Director of the Primary Care Management Academy and when she is not working in her practice, runs a number of training courses and workshops created for those working in primary care as well as providing individual coaching sessions.

 

Dr Asiya Maula

Introduction to lifestyle medicine for GPs

Dr Maula is a GP working across both NHS and private sectors, with a strong focus on patient-centred, root-cause medicine. She holds Master’s degrees with distinction in Public Health and Medical Education, and is certified by the Institute of Functional Medicine (USA) and the International Board of Lifestyle Medicine.
She integrates conventional and complementary approaches, drawing on training with the Kharrazian Institute and the Metabolic Terrain Institute under Dr. Nasha Winters. Her areas of interest include hyperbaric oxygen therapy, metabolic health, and functional recovery in complex conditions such as cancer.
Dr Maula is also a published researcher, author, and educator, regularly delivering training for GP trainees. Her passion lies in empowering both patients and practitioners through evidence-informed, multidimensional care.
