My expertise can be divided broadly into 3 categories: Preventive Cardiology, advanced echocardiography and advanced cardiac device implantation for cardiac rhythm disorders.
Preventive: coronary risk factor modification strategies
Advanced echocardiography: I perform transthoracic echocardiogram, dobutamine and exercise stress echocardiogram, transesophageal echocardiogram, 3D echo, contrast echo, strain analysis echo and cardiac device optimization echo. This includes the assessment for coronary artery disease, structural cardiac problems and also valve disease assessment and follow-up. I therefore look after patients with ischaemic heart disease, valve disease, cardiomyopathy and heart failure and provide expert advice to referring clinicians. I am fully accredited by the British Society of Echocardiography and have also passed the American Society of Echocardiography exam.
Cardiac device implantation: I am also an expert in implanting cardiac pacemakers, implantable cardioverter defibrillator, cardiac resynchronisation therapy devices, implantable loop recorders. I have performed in excess of 1,000 device implantations in total. I am also an expert in lead/device extraction and also lead this busy regional service in the Trust. I therefore see patients who have heart rhythm disorders who require a pacemaker and patients who have heart failure/cardiomyopathy who may require a defibrillator/cardiac resynchronisation device.

Louise Clayton began her career in nursing in 1996 and spent four years working on a cardio-renal acute medical ward in Leicester. During this time her passion to improve the lives of patients living with heart failure was ignited. The ‘revolving door’ experience of those living with heart failure was all too apparent.
She then spent almost 14 years establishing and developing the Leicester City Community Heart Failure Nursing Service. Louise held a number of Honorary lectures posts, teaching across the breadth of the multi-disciplinary team, including facilitating the Leicester programme of the Caledonian heart failure management course.
The last eleven years have been spent developing an Acute Heart Failure Service within University Hospitals of Leicester. Along with heart failure consultants the team now run a 72 hour urgent heart failure service. Previous posts held include Deputy Chair of the British Heart Failure Nurses forum and a previous board member of the British Society of Heart Failure. She spent 4 years as Chair the Alliance for Heart Failure, working with key stakeholders to promote and improve heart failure across the UK.
Louise is now the East Midlands cardiac network lead for heart failure and is developing a strategy to reduce inequity and improve services across the whole of the Midlands.
Throughout her career she has maintained her clinical focus. Seeing patients every day of the week and gaining the most satisfaction from the relationships forged during these times.
