There is an increasing need to provide additional support for colleagues in early career as well as students on placements, with a significant number of new starters leaving the NHS in the first 2 years of their employment.
Our Legacy Nurse Mentors utilise their wide experience of working in a clinical setting to support newly appointed colleagues and to provide additional support for students during their placements. My name is Sam, and I am writing to share my professional journey and my passion for the Advanced Nurse Practitioner (ANP) role. Having recently qualified as an ANP in 2023, I have found my journey both challenging and rewarding. Balancing my full-time work, studies, and family commitments has certainly tested my resilience, yet it has also marked an incredible achievement in my career.
I began my nursing career at Leicester Royal Infirmary Emergency Department after qualifying as a nurse in October 2005. My journey has been diverse, from working as a team leader in a young offender’s institute to serving as a practice nurse for the homeless. These experiences enriched my understanding of healthcare and have led me to my current position as the ANP for Orchard Medical Practice. Additionally, I have taken on the role of ANP Legacy Mentor at the learning hub, where I am dedicated to supporting trainee Advanced Clinical Practitioners (ACPs) and fostering a culture of training and development.
As a mother to three children, I cherish my time spent with my family, attending their various social events, and enjoying the outdoors. Horse riding is another one of my passions; I own four horses and find joy in managing my time to fit in both my professional responsibilities and my interests. I thrive on meeting new people and learning continuously, and I cultivate this value within the teams I work with.
