Early Career GP

The first 5 years of practice after obtaining the Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) is an exciting time as you put learning into practice but it can also be full of challenges as you adjust. There are a variety of exciting opportunities and support programmes for early career GPs, with more new schemes to come.

Early Career GP Groups

Dr Adam Mulla is the Leicester Leicestershire Rutland Training Hub Early Career GP Lead and has developed peer support networks for early career GPs working in and around our area. The format includes face-to-face or virtual CPD meetings, an annual conference, WhatsApp groups and one-to-one advice or signposting. If you would like to join your local Early Career group, or find out what is happening in your area then please see the contact details below:

Fellowship in General Practice

The LLR training hub team has successfully delivered the NHS England GP fellowship scheme which has supported 95 newly qualified GPs across 3 cohorts, as they have settled in to general practice post CCT.  The nationally prescribed scheme ceased for new applicants at the end of March 2024, although GPs who were active on the programme at that point will have the opportunity to continue to ensure that they complete the full two year offer.

The hub team is now developing a localised offer in recognition of the success of the national programme, in the hope that this can continue some of the initiatives that our current and alumni fellows found so valuable as they settled in to post.

The local offer will include:

  • First 5 Essentials Course featuring modules focussing on job hunting, negotiation skills, communication with colleagues, consultation tips and techniques, managing complaints, time management and wellbeing
  • 3 x mentorship sessions on alternate months and to be delivered by locally trained GP mentors.
  • A peer support group incorporating the 30 GPs on the programme and which will meet either face to face or virtually, once monthly.
  • Priority access to our East Midlands Early Years GP Conference 2025.
  • Financial contribution for IMGs requiring a skilled worker visa
  • Access to clinical and non-clinical CPD sessions featured on our Events Calendar: https://www.llrtraininghub.co.uk/events-calendar

Newly qualified GPs (qualifying after 31st March 2024) are eligible to sign up for the local scheme so contact llrtraining.hub@nhs.net for more information. Places are on a first come, first served basis for those GPs who are eligible.
